SLOW DOWN, SCROLL AROUND, AND GET AWAY FROM IT ALL.
As our first artist-in-residence, Lucia Riffel spent a few weeks hunched over her laptop in Spring 2019, translating her animation work from the screen to the page. The resulting flipbooks—collectively titled HANDHELD GETAWAYS—are tiny windows into contemplative, dream-like spaces that reveal themselves, pixel-by-pixel, over repeated viewings.

Lucia Riffel is an installation and animation artist based in Tallahassee, Florida. She navigates the space between physical, digital, and psychological realms in her interdisciplinary practice. Riffel earned her Bachelor of Arts (2015) in Studio Art and Art History at the University of Minnesota, Morris, and her Master of Fine Arts (2018) at Florida State University. Her otherworldly works have been shown at Laundromat Art Space, Day & Night Projects, Urban Glass, The Wiregrass Museum, and Carnation Contemporary. She has been an artist-in-residence at Laboratory Residency, Stay Home Gallery, and Drum Machine Editions. Most recently, Riffel's works have graced billboards, landforms, and highway underpasses across the United States through public exhibitions in Atlanta, Spokane, and Cincinnati.
